Gerald: In honor of Valentines's day, here's a "first kiss" from my recently published Western, called "A Wicked Past".  Notice I shifted the point of view at the start of the kiss so we're left guessing at her actual reaction to his unexpected advances.  The reader has to guess what she's going to do next along with our hero.

FIRST KISS: A WICKED PAST

He stared at her for a long moment and she wondered if he’d explode in anger at her prying. He startled her by jumping up instead, grabbing her by the arms and dancing her around the dining room while shouting. Then he stopped, looked her in the eyes, and before she could think of something witty to say, kissed her on the lips. She stopped thinking entirely.

Archie knew when he was on a roll. Sometime he got lucky in a game and started being dealt winning hands one after the other against the odds. The only thing a gambler can do is hang on for the ride while it lasts. Since he couldn’t kiss Lady Luck on the lips, he settled for the woman in his arms, rosy cheeked and out of breath and beautiful and definitely in need of being kissed. He’d have to gamble she wouldn’t be insulted and throw a stranger out in the snow.

The kiss lasted longer than he’d planned and there was no doubt she enjoyed it as much as he did. Archie decided to press his luck and let his hands slide down her back to rest on her hips. The slight tensing of her body told him it was too soon for that move and he broke the kiss, stepping back and letting go.
