I’m one of those writers who kind of feels guilty if I’m not actually writing something. Like right now, I’m between WIPs and, usually, I like to jump from one WIP to the other because, if I don’t, I might wind up in one of those writing dry spells I hate so much.
But, after two back to back, full-length YA novel WIPs, I just didn’t feel like building another world so soon. Or even revisiting one I’ve already built. So I took a few days off, caught up on my Netflix queue, took a few bike rides with my wife and then, boom, I got a wild hair and wrote three quick, short, FREE zombie poems back to back.
Suddenly, I was hooked. Every night, when the daily writing and the chores were done, when I would usually be logging off or just hanging out, I’d start a new poem. They’re quick, maybe 6-10 pages with VERY liberal font sizing AND spacing, so I could pretty much do one a night.
I might revisit one from the previous day, or start a new one from scratch, or do both, depending on how amped I was on the new stuff. Of course, they’re all freebies and there aren’t a *ton* of paying markets for short, YA zombie poems (ahem), but still, it was a great way to clear the creative cobwebs and get excited about writing again after two long novels that started feeling a little too much like work toward the end.
So if you’re in a slump, a rut, or simply can’t stand the thought of starting a new book at the moment – but don’t feel right not writing something – consider a few short form pieces – poetry, short stories, vignettes, novellas or even songs – to get you back in the mood.
You could:
· Write a short story about one of your WIP’s main characters
· Write a short story about one of your WIP’s not-so-main characters
· Write a song one of your main characters is always singing
· Write a holiday poem to promote your upcoming book
· Write a short “prequel” story – or even novella – for an existing, published book to drum up interest (or feed fan demand)
· Write a FREE giveaway poem or story to help with book promotion
· Write a cute poem or story exclusive to your blog
· Write a guest post, poem, story or “deleted scene” for someone else’s blog
· Turn more attention to your blog and start writing shorter pieces more regularly while you’re in between WIPs
I know none of us have a ton of free time, and most of us want to be “writing forward.” In other words, everything I write, I want it to either be a book, promote a book or help out a friend or fellow writer, reviewer or blogger, like a guest post, deleted scene or book blurb or interview or something.
A lot of my short form writing is promotional, like the giveaway zombie poems and short stories, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun, whimsical, creative and even therapeutic as well.
I know I can’t do a whole ton with my short form writing, and there will come a point in the next week or two when I’ll run out of steam for that as well, and turn my attention to tweaking one of my existing WIPs, or starting a new one. But for now, it’s been a blast!
And isn’t that what writing is supposed to feel like?!?!?
Yours in YA,
Rusty
