A wine country native, K.F. Breene moved to San Francisco for college just shy of a decade ago to pursue a lifelong interest in film. As she settled into the vibrant city, it quickly became apparent that, while she thought making and editing films was great fun, she lacked cinematic genius. For that reason, her career path quickly changed direction. Her next goal was a strange childhood interest, conjured at the dining room table while filling out a form. For some reason, her young self wanted to be an accountant. Thinking on it now, she often wonders how she had any friends. Regardless, it was the direction she finally took.

While she could wrangle numbers with the best of 'em, and even though she wore the crown as the most outspoken, belligerent accountant in the world, her mind got as stuffy as her daily routine. It was here that she dusted off her creative hat and began writing. Now she makes movies in her head, not worried about lighting, shutter speed or editing equipment. Turns out, a computer is much easier to manage than a crowd of actors. She should know, she was an actor at one time.

FIRST KISS: Adam Finds a Purr..fect Man in Dianne Hartsock's tale, PIP. @diannehartsock @KMNbooks #firstkiss #free

KAREN: In Dianne Hartsock's Flash Fiction tale, PIP, Adam is in for a surprise when he finds out how purrr..fect his companion is.

***Giveaway: Dianne is offering free reads: Off Sides and Damon's Touch to all. Details below.

FIRST KISS: PIP
by Dianne Hartsock

Adam sat up, startled, then slumped back into the cushions, recognizing the squeak of the pet door. Only Pip, though even his company would be better than the lonely hour he'd just spent in the empty house.

He rubbed at his eyes, embarrassed by his tears when the sleek creature sauntered into the room. Yes, sauntered. Only way to describe it. Pip sauntered, strolled, strutted, behaved like he owned the world.

He never simply walked anywhere.

They stared at each other and Adam sniffed, "What, you've never seen a man cry before?"

Solemn gray eyes blinked at him and Adam ducked his head, his eyes filling again as the ache in his heart spilled over. The couch dipped and Pip's head rubbed against his thigh. Adam reached over and lifted the beautiful animal onto his lap. "At least I have you to love me," he whispered and began to stroke his soft gray fur, letting the repetitive motion sooth his frayed nerves.

Pip's rumbling purr became hypnotic, easing the pain tightening his chest. His boyfriend hadn't been happy in their relationship, but did he have to go out on him? Worst yet, all his friends had known before he caught him with someone else in their bed.

"And that's that," he muttered, wondering how long a broken heart took to mend. A gentle nip on his fingers dragged him from self-pity. "Hungry?" he asked. Pip rose and stretched, tail brushing under Adam's nose, making him laugh.

"Brat." He raised a brow when the cat didn't budge. "Well, are you going to get down?"

Pip glanced away, yawned, then jumped to the floor as if it were his idea. Adam shook his head as he crossed the room to the kitchen. The thought of food nauseated him, so he opened a tin for Pip, then went to the bedroom and dropped onto his stomach, clutching the pillows over his head. The bed felt huge without Ken in it, and he rolled into a ball, pulling Ken's pillow to his chest. God, he longed for sleep.

*  *  *

Pip stretched, careful not to wake the man sleeping next to him. It took hours and lots of tears before Adam had closed his exhausted eyes. Moving slowly, he arched his back and shifted into his human form. Adam had never seen him like this, hadn't a clue his pet was actually a man. Pip smirked and ran a hand down his lean chest. A very sexy one at that.

Adam sighed in his sleep and Pip rolled toward him, leaned on his elbow to look at the guy in the faint glow from the digital clock on the bedside table. What he wouldn't give to pull him into his arms, kiss the hurt from his heart. He tenderly brushed the strands of Adam's dark hair off his forehead, bent and kissed his closed eyes and tasted his tears. Ken was an effing idiot.

Pip smiled fondly in the darkness. Adam had found him in an alley last summer, the worst for an encounter with a vicious Tom. He'd carried him in his arms, so gently! Nursed him, fed him a bowl of milk, given him a home. Pip had only meant to stay a few days, but Adam had been so sweet to him. The days had turned into weeks then months. Even after that bastard Ken had moved in, Adam would still find time for him, stroking his fur while they listened to music or watched a movie together on the couch.

An ache crept into his heart and he dared stroke a finger lightly down Adam's soft cheek. He'd give just about anything to kiss his full mouth. He dreamed of those lips almost every night, caressing him, sliding over his skin. What would Adam do if he kissed him tonight? If he gathered his slim body in his arms and took all he wanted? Would he be frightened? Repulsed by him?

Pip lowered his head, blinked at a sting of tears. Maybe it was time for him to go. Find a new home with someone who didn't stir passions in him he couldn't control and the longing for something he could never have.

"Who are you?"

He jerked his head up and met Adam's wide gaze. The guy's chest rose and fell with his quick breaths, but Pip didn't sense any fear, only wonder and a building excitement. His thoughts raced. How to explain?

Adam deserved the truth. "I'm Pip."

A smile curled Adam's perfect lips. "I hoped it was you. So many nights I felt you beside me, held you in my arms, but when I woke in the morning you were gone. A dream. I missed you."

"What about Ken?"

Pain swept Adam's face. "I was lonely and thought that was love."

Pip moved closer to Adam until their bodies touched. He cupped his face, looked deep into his eyes.

"No, this is love, if you can accept me. I've wanted you for a long time."

"And I've dreamed of you long enough." Adam brushed his lips over Pip's, teasing. "I want the reality of you."

Pip brought their lips together, velvet and warmth, gentle at first. But then Adam's lips parted and he fell into the sweet depths of his kiss and the strong arms of his lover.

FIRST KISS from Tempting Sin
by Shelli Rosewarne

"Enjoying the view?" The low voice made her jump and she spun around, shocked.
"What are you doing here?" she snapped.
He laughed, spreading his hands wide, a gesture of innocence she knew he didn't possess. "It's a free sky."
She glared at him. Sin was always appealing—it was designed that way—so it shouldn't surprise her that he was gorgeous. Well over six feet, heavy muscles under pale skin, one arm encircled by an intricate set of tattoos that wrapped lovingly around his biceps. His face was masculine perfection: strong lines, dark hair, and eyes the deep green of emeralds. Gazing into them, Isaura could almost see the flickering flames in their depths. She was well aware that she shouldn't look, but sometimes it was just too tempting.
"Surely there's plenty of sky," she retorted. "Must you pick the same cloud as me?"
He smiled; really, that smile should be outlawed. "There is indeed, but then I came for the view as well." His gaze was bold and slightly amused as it ran over her.
"Go find another view," she told him sharply.
"You know, you're blushing."
She glared. Lying was a sin, so she couldn't deny it, but she didn't see the need to admit to it, either.
His eyes mocked her. "Still sticking with the guys upstairs, then?"
She nodded shortly, turning away.
"A shame." His voice had dropped and she felt it running down her spine. "It's so much more fun below. But then you're too pure to be tempted by anything like that. Aren't you, Isaura?"
She half-turned, surprised he knew her name. He took a step closer, his body brushing up against hers. An odd tingle ran through her, an unfamiliar feeling starting in her stomach and pooling lower.
"It's called desire," he murmured.
She should leave, run away and never see him again. Despite herself she was curious; it was intense, so far away from anything she'd experienced. She recalled the restlessness she'd been experiencing lately, the desire for something else, something new.
That deep green gaze was consuming her. She couldn't look away as his head dipped and his lips covered hers. The softest brush of flesh, but over and over until her lips tingled and burned and she felt herself parting them on a soft gasp. His tongue slipped between them, the kiss deepening, becoming more desperate, needy. Flames spread through her body as her blood caught on fire. The sensations were earthier, more elemental than anything she had experienced, and yet they made her feel lighter, freer than she had in a long time.
He released her. She knew she ought to rail at him, but instead her fingers crept to her swollen lips, feeling oddly bereft.
"I have watched you for a long time, Isaura. You are not meant to be on high. It is not where you belong."
Isaura wanted to protest, but she had the same doubts, the same questions herself lately.
"Where do I belong, then?" she whispered.
He smiled at her. "With me."

FIRST KISS from THE MASKED LADY AND THE MURDER by Lindsay Downs

Set-up-
Earlier in the evening Lord Robert Markson was introduced to Lady Kristina Rosewood at a masked ball. Taken by her uniqueness, he knows there’s only one way to satisfy a remaining question he has about her.

To that end Lord Robert Markson, Viscount of Hampshire, risks life, limb and her reputation to discover the answer.

Now for the First Kiss-
With care she stepped forward and loosened the window latch, the fire poker held so he could see it. He should know she meant him harm if he overstepped society's boundaries any more than already he’d done, she thought.
For every step he advanced she took one in retreat— an uncomfortable feeling, but necessary. Once he was in, she brandished her weapon at him. “M’ lord… or considering where we are, wouldn’t Robert be more appropriate? What is it you wish to learn from me?” she demanded, waving the poker at him.
“This,” he whispered.
Before Kristina could react, much less cry out in alarm, he was upon her with his arms around her waist, a feeling she’d secretly fantasized about. The fireplace poker slipped from her hand as she let him draw her forward until they were pressed together as one. Through hooded lids she watched him lower his head to hers. Not questioning what would happen next, she raised herself on her toes until lips touched lips. As she felt the tip of his tongue tease her mouth she opened to allow him entry. Before she knew it she was swept away in her first real kiss.
As quickly as it had started, it ended. “Now my question has been answered. You taste as delicious as you look,” he whispered.
She started to reach for his nape when the sound of someone attempting entry brought her back to reality. She didn’t want to return as what had just happened… words couldn’t describe. All she knew it had been pure heaven.
“Robert, you must sneak out as you came for my maid returns and it would be unseemly for her to catch us like this,” she whispered.
“Yes. As much as I don’t wish to agree, you’re right,” he answered softly. In an instant he was back on the tiny terrace blowing her a kiss, then disappeared as Amanda entered.
“M’ lady, please step away from the window as we don’t know who might see you.”

Excerpt-
As she contemplated an answer, he decided it was better to charge ahead. Stepping up, he set his right hand on the small of her back only to feel a tingle course up his arm before settling in his stomach. Unsure, but knowing he needed to continue on to enjoy the feel of her in his arms, he grasped her right hand and stepped them back as one.
“M' lord, maybe you didn’t hear me earlier," Kristina said, trying to escape his gentle but firm hold. "I can’t dance.”
“That, my dear lady, is because you’ve never partnered with me. Now relax and let the music fill your mind,” he answered back, whispering the words into her ear.
Robert shifted his head so he would be able to see her expression. She looked panicked at first, but after a few steps she wore a broad, relaxed grin.
“What’s happening to me? By now I’ve trod on the gentleman’s feet several time,” she said, breathing heavily.
What is it with this woman? He thought, gazing down upon her upturned face. All she’s done since we’ve met is confuse me. Now with her breast rubbing against me, I’m at a total loss.
“M’ lady, you’re dancing and causing me no harm,” he said, sweeping her gracefully into a turn lest they tumble down the steps that led to the lawn.
He watched as she scrunched her brow. He suspected trying to marshal her thoughts. Robert was beginning to wonder if she might be as confused as he.
“But why? That, I can’t understand.”
“Robert, Kristina if I might interrupt your dance, I believe I’ve an explanation,” Donna said, settling a hand on his arm.
He brought them to a stop, then bowed to both ladies and escorted them to a nearby stone bench. Once they were settled, he leaned against the banister and waited. “Well?” he finally asked when his sister wasn’t forthcoming.
“Believe it or not, it’s very simple. Kristina, when you’re with Robert, you’re relaxed. If you hadn’t noticed, when you speak to him your stammer is gone, and while dancing you’re comfortable in his arms.”
Robert saw she was going to say something to Donna and intervened. “No, look at me when you’re talking, even if it’s to my sister.” He looked to her. “I’m sorry, but that might be the only way.”
Looking surprised, she did as he asked, keeping her focus on him. “Lady Kersey, I don’t understand. No, wait. I’ve not stammered, so what you say must be true. And with the dancing it’s the same, m’ lady?”
“Yes. Now might I suggest we return to the ball as I’m sure my dear husband must have tired of the chit he’d chased after and is now searching me out.” Donna stood, then started for the doors they’d exited through a short while ago.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
What does it take to be a bestselling author? Determination, skill, talent, luck or taking a risk with a venture into a totally new genre. For me it was a little of some and a lot of the others.
In 2008 when I got two books published I thought it was due to skill; little did I know it was more luck than anything. Over the next three years I wrote, submitted, got rejected. I then did what I tell everyone who asks; I wrote some more. I didn’t give up.
More on a dare than anything I tried my hand at a regency, one of the most difficult genres because of the rules, which I might add I broke almost every one. Within two days of its release the book was on a best seller list and stayed there for two months.
Turns out it is all of the aforementioned.
After two failed marriages, one from divorce while with the other died unexpectedly I decided upon retirement to move. That opportunity came in September 2012 when I migrated to Texas.
For me, as a multipublished author, it was one of the best things I’ve done to date. Now, every day I can write, creating stories to take my readers to places they can only dream about.
I’m also a member of the Published Authors Network (PAN) by the Romance Writers of America (RWA).

First Kiss: The Biggest Mistake of Her Life...or not... @KennedyStreath @KMNbooks #giveaway #firstkiss

First Kiss from the YA Novel Roman (Saints and Sinners)
by Kennedy Streath

Tj's been warned, stay away from Roman. TJ's 16 and Roman watches her, constantly, silently. She's about to make the biggest mistake of her life...

She barely knew him, but she felt his pain, his sorrow. She’d cut him, left him bleeding. This stranger, this dangerous stranger, mattered. Tears leaked from the corners of her eyes, the strain of her guilt and dismay too deep for her to mask.
With one hand, Roman swept the hood back, and took a step, then two, closing the distance between them. Brushing her cheek, he gently fingered away the first droplets, unaware she was close to unleashing a torrent that would shame them both.

“TJ.”

His voice was guttural, deep, and ragged, as if he wasn’t used to speaking. She wondered if she looked as surprised as he did, that he’d spoken, let alone said her name.

Words releasing in an avalanche, she said, “You didn’t come to dinner so I made you a plate and Ben said he’d drop it off but he didn’t and then Marsha came over and we sparred and it got late and,” she paused for a breath and continued, a little more slowly, “I worried you might be hungry.” Pointing to the leftovers on the small table against the far wall, she said, “It’s just spaghetti and meatballs. You can heat it up in the microwave.”

His lips twitching, Roman continued stroking her cheek with his thumb, the pad rough on her skin, tracing a path from her eye along the cheekbone, following the contours to the corner of her mouth and back. Circling down to her chin, he swept the jut of her jaw and nestled into the dimple with thumb and forefinger teasing the flesh, pulling until she yielded and brought her mouth closer to his.
She had no defense against his hot breath mingling with hers, his lips so close she could almost taste them.

“I didn’t mean… This afternoon. I’m so…”

He said, “You did,” accusing and forgiving in a single breath.

Cupping her neck with the other hand—an act so possessive, so sensual, she thought she would swoon—he closed what little distance remained between them, close enough she’d have sworn she could hear his heartbeat, feel the blood hammering in his veins.

When he brushed her lips, it was feather light, a punishment. He knew that she’d shied away deliberately, not willing to trust either him or herself.

“Roman—”

Pulling her body in tight, he cut off her breath, his mouth devouring hers with a hunger she didn’t understand, probing, demanding, his tongue sweeping across hers in a tangle of passion that nearly brought her to her knees.

Cursing, he pulled away and strode to the table. He muttered something in that strange language, then said tersely, “Look, I’m sorry. I-I … had no right.”

Rubbing his scalp, he turned to look at her, his eyes lit like burning coals, bluish-white flares in an ink jet sky, his dusky face set in hard planes, the bones stretched so taut she feared they’d slice through the thin skin.

She had no idea what was going through his mind. Hers was a jumbled morass of confusion, a muddle of fear and longing and feelings for which she had no vocabulary, let alone experience, to describe.

My first kiss…

Roman is enigmatic, tempting, dangerous, irresistible. TJ's about to make the biggest mistake of her young life. Or is she? In a dying town, two teens marked as broken struggle with the burden of lies masquerading as truth. Not even a man of faith is strong enough to hold back the coming darkness.

For older young adults and adults, Roman (Saints and Sinners) will take you through a dark and perilous journey of the mind and heart. It will take you to the place where more than faith will be tested when it comes time to choose.

TRR’s Rebecca says:
Roman himself is the ultimate dark, brooding almost anti-hero…
…read almost like poetry in places
…raises teen angst to an entirely new level and adds a large dose of supernatural malevolence and mystery.

FIRST KISS from Book II of The Golden Key Chronicles, Candra's Freedom by AJ Nuest

Beautiful though it was, his story did not spark her memories. Contrary to what she had so desperately hoped, she experienced no glimmer of recognition or illuminating epiphany, no sought-after moment when all the events fell perfectly into place.

Sorrow was the only thing that saddled her heart, and the bitter realization everything he told her was the truth. If nothing else, the grating pain in her head confirmed it.

Once he finished, she eased back from where she’d perched with her shoulders high and tight, and released her death grip on the edge of the bench. One detail, however, seemed suspiciously absent from his tale. “How long?”

He stopped pacing and lifted his brows. “My lady?”

“How long did we know each other before I came through the veil? This time of Gleaning you spoke of. How long did it last? Six months? A year?”

His shoulders lowered the slightest degree. “Three days.”

“What?” She sprang to her feet.

The sudden movement, the horrified shock and brutal pounding in her head were too much. Bloated tears swarmed her eyes and a strangled sob escaped her throat. Her balance faltered. In a flash, he was before her, grasping her upper arms, the flickering light along his brow a ghostly apparition.

Three days with him and she’d risked everything? Given up her entire life? No, no, people didn’t experience the kind of love he described after only three days. They couldn’t. Not unless they were completely insane!

She dropped her face into her hands and an anguished moan seeped through her fingers. What the hell kind of spineless, weak-willed twit had she been? Falling in love with him inside the span of three days?

“Take heart, sweet Rowena. Though our time together was short, my love for you cannot be measured in the mere passing of days.”

When had he pulled her into his arms? At what moment did her forehead come to rest on his shoulder? She straightened and seized the open collar of his waistcoat, fisting the edges in her hands. She wanted to shake some sense into him. How could he say such things? Didn’t he see how impossible this all was?

Yet with them standing so close, every feature of his face was finally made clear. Vibrant ardor glistened in his eyes, reflecting the torch glow like two polished bits of topaz, beckoning her near. The anxious crease between his brows begged her to soothe his misery with a kind word. The heady allure of his masculine scent enveloped her in its warm caress, urging her closer to his lips. Her pulse stuttered, then raced. And when he placed his hand on the small of her back and pressed her near, her breasts met the firm wall of his chest, a gentle sigh escaped her lips.

Perhaps her memories waited in his kiss. Just like all those fabled stories Faelynn had told young Vaighn. A magic mirror, a handsome prince…a fated kiss and everything in her world would once again make sense. No more loneliness, no more pain, no more fighting to remember…

She went up on the toes of her silk slippers and tipped her head, tugging his collar until his parted lips hovered a scant moonbeam above hers. A jolt of pain seared her spine, but she clenched her fingers, strengthening her resolve. She would not be denied this chance. “Kiss me,” she whispered.

Desire flickered in his gaze, and caution warred with desperation in her heart. But surely one kiss was worth the risk? A simple touch in exchange for her memories.

His arms tensed at her waist. One heated, taut thigh slipped amid the folds of her skirt, nestling between her legs. “You test the limits of my restraint, madam.” A thrill coursed her skin when his breath skimmed the moisture on her lips. “Be forewarned. What you request, I shall not give lightly.”

“If you love me, Prince Caedmon, then prove it. Now kiss me.”

His mouth descended in a rush. Over and again his velvet lips touched, the tip of his tongue flicking and sweeping her upper lip until she opened herself to him.

With the first stroke of his tongue against hers, a delicious ripple of arousal swirled through her belly. Sweet tears of the nine, the man could kiss. He tasted of fresh air, the first hint of spring…freedom.

She nipped and sucked his lower lip, delving her tongue inside for another heady sip. His low moan set her head spinning. Exhilaration sizzled along her nerve endings. An aching pulse warmed and moistened the inner folds between her thighs.

Yes… Her body knew this man.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I am a multi-published, award-winning author who lives in the middle of a cornfield in NW Indiana. My loving husband, two beautiful children and a bevy of spoiled pets have agreed to stay and, in exchange for three rations per day and laundry service, tolerate my lunacy. While I spend most days happily ensconced in crafting romance across a multitude of genres, an underground coup has been percolating. The dogs just informed me the cat is secretly vying for dictatorship.
