Overnighter in Eugene, Oregon

Wayne and I travel at least once a year to Eugene for sports events. We root for the USC Trojans when they play the University of Oregon.

This trip we saw women's basketball the new Matthew Knight Arena. We were glad the Women of Troy come out victorious, but no matter what, we enjoy this town.

We drove from Bellingham and arrived in time to check in at the downtown Eugene Hilton. We like to stay there because it's within reasonable walking distance to both football and basketball. We had a nice dinner at the Steelhead Brewing Company before calling Oregon Taxi. It was raining, so we thought it was a better option.

The cab driver steered us to a great breakfast spot, The Original Pancake House.Wayne and I had their signature Apple Pancake. Don't let the name fool you. It is a plate size air filled pancake with sautéed apples and cinnamon sugar baked until it caramelizes.

To work off our breakfast, we walked along the Willamette on the Ruth Bascom Riverbank Trail. Shortly after we left, it began to rain but we didn't stop. The river was really high, fast and muddy. As we walked along the shoreline, we saw places where it was beaching the banks.

What is a mini-vacation without lots of good food. We probably should have opted for a light dinner, but NOT. We headed over to the Cornucopia Bar and Burgers on 5th. It was a fun, funky spot for a burger for me and a steak for Wayne. Now we'll have to go out walking again! Hope the rain has stopped.

Lopez Island, WA

Having an airplane in the Pacific Northwest can be a lot of fun when the weather cooperates. From our home base at Bellingham Airport, we can easily hop out to the San Juan Islands in less than half an hour.

Earlier this month we did just that. We took 997 out for a little jaunt to Lopez Island. This is one of the quieter spots. We've been here before to take a walk into town for lunch. It's a bit of a hike, but a pleasant one.
