Hyperbole and a Half
by Allie Brosh
I don't have a lot to say about this book, and that isn't because I didn't think it was a good book, it's because I did think it was a good book. Brilliant even. So basically, I'm not talented enough with words to explain the awesomeness of Hyperbole and a Half in a way that would come even close to doing it justice.Summary: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative--like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it--but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book:
Pictures
Words
Stories about things that happened to me
Stories about things that happened to other people because of me
Eight billion dollars*
Stories about dogs
The secret to eternal happiness*
*These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!
There are plenty of writers who are funny. There are plenty of writers who can be honest in their story telling. There are plenty of people that can talk about things like depression in a way that is genuine and accurate without seeming like a Lifetime movie. There are plenty of writers that can take things that should be mundane to read about and make it interesting and enjoyable to read. And there's probably plenty of writers who can also draw.
But it's rare to find one that can do all these things. Allie Brosh? Well...
(Even if you're not familiar with her blog, you probably have seen variations of the above picture floating around the internet. That's an example of one of Allie's drawings, they're funny and expressive and awesome)
I think the quality of the book is excellent. Quite a few of my favourites from her blog were included and I really liked the new content too.
If you like her blog, you should get this book. And if you haven't read her blog, 1) go do that now because it's one of those blogs that make your day better when you see she's updated it, and it can cheer you up if you're not in a good mood, and 2) you should also get this book.
Later.
